An East London arts charity is to create 38 affordable studios in Hackney Wick – after announcing only the second permanent acquisition of land in its 30-year history.
Bow Arts Trust revealed it has reached an agreement to buy 10,000 square feet of workspace at the Hackney Yards development, which is set to be completed in late 2026.
The charity said the space will house studios that it will let out for a price around 34 per cent less than the local average rent.
Tenants will also be asked to actively contribute to the community through workshops, exhibitions and more.
Marcel Baettig, CEO of Bow Arts Trust, said: “Partnerships make it possible for us to keep artist workspace affordable, retain creative talent, and really invest in artists and the arts.
“We are inspired by our long-term partners, Notting Hill Genesis, and its commitment to sustaining local community, and supporting creativity to thrive.”
Notting Hill Genesis, a not-for-profit housing association, won the bid to develop Hackney Yards in 2021.
The plan comprises three sites close to Hackney Wick Overground station that are expected to provide 190 new homes, including 31 for social rent, and more than 4,000 square metres of commerical space.
Bow Arts’ proposals were a key element of the successful Notting Hill Genesis bid.
George Clarke, the housing association’s head of communities and commercial properties, said: “We are over the moon to secure this deal to sell the affordable workspace to our long-term partners Bow Arts Trust, following our success at Royal Albert Wharf.
“This is a real milestone in establishing long-term, affordable creative space in the heart of Hackney Wick.”
Notting Hill Genesis is set to work closely with Bow Arts to create a manage a community benefit programme, which will range from public exhibitions and events to classes and workshops for adults and children.
Bow Arts is an arts and education charity and a social enterprise that supports the growth of sustainable local creative economies.
More than 900 artists, designers and makers are affiliated with the charity through its workspace, Nunnery Gallery, affordable housing for creatives, and award-winning schools and young people’s learning programme.
