Titbits – New year, old habits

◆ To celebrate the new year, what better than to share a post by renowned local Insta meme merchant, Socks House Meeting. The popular account compared a typical New Year’s Eve in west London with one in the east. Under ‘West’, they included photos of a black BMW, Lagavulin scotch, Wandsworth watering hole The Ship, and logos for brands such as Bulgari. On the ‘East’ side were signs for Columbia Road, Dalston Kingsland station and The Army & Navy pub, along with a bottle of orange wine, a pint of Guinness and a Toyota Prius. Sounds about right!

◆ The council, under its #ZeroWasteHackney tagline, was recently exhorting residents to ‘Go beyond recycling’. It suggested some ‘inspiring resolutions’ for 2025, including waste avoidance, cutting single-use plastics, and a conscious wardrobe. It’s a bit puzzling coming from a borough without a dedicated zero waste strategy. But hey, Titbits is encouraged by the hashtag!
