Time is running out to apply for grants of up to £1,000 for cultural events marking key events in the transgender awareness and LGBT+ history calendar.

Hackney’s culture team has £15,000 to give out ahead of November’s Transgender Awareness Week and Transgender Day of Remembrance, and next February’s LGBT+ History Month.

The council is looking for events celebrating past and present Hackney communities under the LGBTQIA+ umbrella – lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans, queer/questioning, intersex, asexual.

In previous years, grants have been awarded to screenings of queer cinema at the Rio in Dalston, a walking tour of Stoke Newington, and a discussion for queer women and non-binary people. Funds have also been awarded to a zine-making project making.

Grants could be used to support a range of events including club nights, exhibitions, talks or podcasts and must have LGBTQIA+ leadership or partnership.

Hackney has London’s fourth largest LGBT+ population at 16,389 people – 7.8 per cent of local residents, according to the 2021 Census.

It also has a higher proportion of people who identify as bisexual, queer or as a non-binary gender than any other London borough, and England’s ninth highest proportion of transgender residents.

The grants are part of the council’s Pride 365 cultural funding and the council is urging people to get their applications in by Sunday 20 August.

Applications should be submitted here.
