Firefighters tackle Stoke Newington flat blaze

A blaze in a studio flat on Stoke Newington High Street that took place overnight (Friday 5 May) left most of it damaged by fire.

The studio flat was on the second floor of a three-storey building containing a shop with flats above.

The fire brigade was first alerted at 4.59am, and crews from Stoke Newington, Homerton and Islington fire stations rushed to the scene.

Around 25 firefighters and four fire engines tackled the blaze,

The fire was under control by 5.49am, just 50 minutes later.

One man escaped from the property before the fire brigade arrived.

He was taken to hospital by ambulance, suffering from smoke inhalation.

During their search of the building, firefighters in breathing apparatus rescued a cat.

The fire brigade received five emergency calls about the incident.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
