Hackney Citizen up for a hat-trick of prizes at national newspaper awards
The Hackney Citizen has been shortlisted in three categories at the national newsawards 2021.
The paper will be hoping to retain its mantle as ‘Niche Market Newspaper of the Year’, won in 2019 before the awards took a break last year because of the coronavirus pandemic.
It will be up against another local publication, KCWLondon based in Kensington and Chelsea, and specialist interest newspapers such as Cage & Aviary Birds, Fishing News, and the Times Literary Supplement.
This time around, the Citizen will also be in the running for ‘ICNN Independent Community Newspaper of the Year’ and ‘ICNN Independent Community Website of the Year’.

The Independent Community News Network (ICNN), of which the Citizen is a member, is a group of independent news providers which are community-focused and “uphold high professional standards, including accuracy, transparency, integrity, accountability and fairness”.
The newsawards, formerly the Newspaper Awards, are the “only awards that are dedicated to celebrating the best in news media print, technology and business innovation”.
When the Citizen won ‘Niche Market Newspaper of the Year’, the judges said: “Commended in 2017 and 2018, and finally taking top spot for 2019. This is a beautifully presented hyper-local read with traditional values and a modern twist.”
The publication was previously ‘highly commended’ in the same category at the 2014 Newspaper Awards – singled out by the judges as “an excellent concept that hits the target market right between the eyes”.
This year’s awards ceremony takes place at the Royal Lancaster Hotel in London on 11 November.
