Role models required: Council appeals for male volunteers to ‘inspire the next generation’
Hackney Council is on the lookout for volunteers who can motivate the next generation of young men in the borough.
The Town Hall wants male role models from all walks of life to speak to kids about their experiences at a special careers event in October.
Men who live, work or have been to school in Hackney can apply.
The council says the ideal candidate “will have an interesting career story to share, from overcoming adversity, starting up a business, to working in the creative industries or in any social care setting”.
Ryan Boothe, a pupil at Stoke Newington School, said last year’s event “actually helped me think about how I present myself and can be more confident in myself to achieve and do what I want to do in life”.
This year’s get-together, which will take place from 12-4pm on Tuesday 2 October at Young Hackney’s Forest Road hub, will see an audience from schools across the borough listen to speeches before getting a chance to chat to all the volunteers.
Deputy Mayor of Hackney Cllr Anntoinette Bramble said: “Inspiring the next generation to achieve their dreams is the duty of us all.
“This event provides a chance for our young people to learn about a wide variety of careers ranging from the fire service to health and social care, while giving them a chance to talk about the trials and tribulations of the world of work.
“It is also an opportunity to create a network of professionals that can work with the next generation to help them be the leaders of tomorrow.
“If you’re an entrepreneur, have an unusual job or simply love what you do I would encourage you to volunteer.”
The closing date for applications is Monday 3 September.
