Stoke Newington headteacher made Director of Education for Hackney
The headteacher of Stoke Newington School is to become Hackney’s new Director of Education, the council has announced.
Annie Gammon, who has led the school on Clissold Road for 10 years, will replace interim director Sian Davies in September.
The former maths teacher said she is looking forward to working with children, staff and parents to build on the strengths of a borough with “some of the best schools in the country”.
She added: “This is a particularly exciting time to take on this role, as the council and schools continue to work together toward our shared goal of making sure all young people in Hackney have the best possible start in life and can access the opportunities available to them across the borough and beyond.”
Deputy Mayor Anntoinette Bramble, who was given the new title of cabinet member for education, young people and children’s social care in a recent post-election reshuffle, said she was “delighted” to welcome Gammon to the council.
“During her decade at Stoke Newington School, she has always worked tirelessly to ensure students receive the best possible education and are well prepared for whatever they go on to do after school,” she said.
“Annie joins us at an exciting and challenging time for education in Hackney, and I’m looking forward to working with her to deliver our shared ambitions for the borough’s young people.”
Gammon has worked in education for over 25 years, and was previously deputy headteacher at Sir John Cass Redcoat school in Tower Hamlets, where she acted as a consultant for the council.
She was also a founding member of the Advisory Committee on Mathematics Education (ACME), which advises the government, and chairs the 21st Century group of Hackney headteachers.
