Climate campaigners set for Saturday stunt in Hackney
Green pressure group Divest Hackney is to hold a demonstration bemoaning the council’s continued investment in fossil fuels tomorrow.
Campaigners will banish a “fossil fuel monster” from the borough as part of a coordinated protest spanning 14 London boroughs.
The stunt comes two months after Hackney Council agreed to divest 50 per cent of its pension fund’s fossil fuel stocks over the next six years.
Divest Hackney’s Gabriel Davalos welcomed the Town Hall’s commitment, but said it “simply does not go far enough”, adding: “We are proud to join 26 other local borough campaigns in demanding total divestment from fossil fuels across London.
“If our councils are really serious about tackling climate change to ensure a safe and clean energy future for all Londoners, then the time for partial commitments is over.”
Waltham Forest and Southwark last year vowed to divest 100 per cent of their stocks in oil, gas and coal companies, an agreement Divest Hackney described as “historic”.
On Saturday, the group says three different fossil fuel monsters will travel through London by bike and by bus, with local campaigners “chasing them away”.
Rallies will also be held outside Town Halls across the capital, with protestors scheduled to reach Hackney at 2pm.
