New plan to demolish Acorn pub emerges just weeks after it won protected status

Fresh plans to demolish the Acorn pub in Queensbridge Road, Haggerston, have been tabled just weeks after it was listed as an Asset of Community Value (ACV).

A planning application on Hackney Council’s website refers to the “demolition of existing pub building…and the erection of a seven-storey building” comprising several self-contained flats.

The application was registered on 24 January and people can comment on the plans until 6 March.

The scheme follows an earlier, unsuccessful application to knock down the early Victorian building.

The pub closed last year and it had been hoped it would reopen under new management after winning ACV status, which means it has greater protection.

It is not yet clear what this will mean in practice for the new demolition plan, but Lisa Shell from amenity group the Hackney Society tweeted: “Applicant fails to justify impact of loss of ACV. Its replacement causes harm.”
