Hackney New School and Sixth Form – a school focused on music
Hackney New School is delighted to introduce you to Hackney New Sixth Form – a new Sixth Form for Hackney which will focus on academic excellence and enable all students to achieve success and access to the most exclusive universities throughout the United Kingdom and beyond.
Hackney New Sixth Form will offer an A level curriculum which will provide outstanding teaching and learning opportunities from an experienced and highly motivated staff.
Although the school and Sixth Form (which is due to open in September 2016) are new, it possesses the staff, the breadth of knowledge, experience and expertise to help your son/daughter achieve their full potential – not only academically, but additionally on a personal and socially developmental basis.
Hackney New School and Hackney New Sixth Form place great emphasis on their Core Vision. It is an institution which strongly believes in academic excellence, self-belief, intellectual curiosity and responsibility.
It is, indeed, a school which wants to produce knowledgeable, confident, open-minded and engaged students who will be outstanding in the career that they eventually choose.
As you may already be aware, Hackney New Sixth Form (together with the lower school) is ‘unique’ for its innovative ‘extended day’ policy.
The opening hours from 7.30am (with an optional breakfast club) until 5 – 6pm are divided into a ‘Teaching Morning’ and a ‘Study Afternoon’ where Sixth Form students will be able to engage with valuable enrichment, mentoring and extracurricular activities, in addition to opportunities for further private study and homework periods in a state of the art brand new building on the Kingsland Basin.
The school, Sixth Form (and indeed Hackney New Primary School, which has recently opened its doors) are at the forefront of educational technology.
Each student is equipped with their own chrome book and the Music Department is well resourced with practice rooms, instruments, a recording studio and advanced apple technology for composition, performance and deep learning.
A host of instrumental tutors support the department in the delivery of their vision and the opportunities to excel are numerous and extensive, which also include strong and well-established links and partnerships with Hackney Music Development Trust (HMDT Music) and the Trinity School of Music
The Sixth Form, in particular, will accentuate academic excellence and the individual student’s involvement in the community life of the school, with a particular emphasis on the student’s contribution to the excellent musical opportunities which the school provides.
All Sixth Form students will be expected to take part in musical activities, such as choir and orchestra, in addition to individual instrumental and voice lessons where students can build upon and gain further qualifications in Theory and Practice, which will go some way in developing an array of essential life skills and prove very attractive to potential Russell Group universities in the future.
As well as mentoring programmes to help with lower school students, truly valuable work experience opportunities at the heart of the Old Street and Hoxton Tech hub and a unique involvement with the Sixth Form (and whole-school) ‘Core Programme’ – a debate based course to explore the history of ideas in literature, politics and science.
This is a course which is unique to HNS and Hackney New Sixth Form. It aims to develop the thinking and debating skills of all Sixth formers and provide them with the tools to make an easy transition to the worlds of professional work and Higher Education.
Furthermore, at Hackney New Sixth Form, all students will have access to a first-rate programme of Higher Education and Careers Education, Information and Guidance (CEIAG) from a seasoned and dedicated team who have enabled previous cohorts of students gain entry to Oxbridge and other Russell Group universities for every undergraduate course imaginable.
Total commitment to ALL students
Hackney New Sixth Form is completely committed to ensuring outstanding progress and achievement for all students and to equip them for ambitious next steps into Higher Education, training/apprenticeships or immediate employment.
Additionally, it seeks to provide an academic pathway with a choice of academic and demanding A level courses which will enable all students to gain entry to the most selective universities.
In so doing, the Sixth Form has the goal of ensuring the highest quality specialist teaching that will excite, challenge and support all learners.
The Sixth Form also takes its pastoral responsibilities very seriously and will provide individual support and guidance to ensure all students take full advantage of the rich educational, enrichment and social opportunities.
The Director of Sixth Form/Assistant Headteacher, Mr. Brian McGowan is relishing the challenge of developing students as independent, confident and responsible adults, taking control of their futures and playing their part in leading the whole school and setting excellent example.
What’s special and unique about Hackney New Sixth Form?
Whilst it is a ‘new’ Sixth Form, the school has the staff, the experience and expertise to provide a first-class post-16 education.
Only two years into existence, Hackney New School has already been described by Ofsted (June 2015) as ‘good with many outstanding features’ and the Governors, Senior Leadership Team and Staff to build upon and improve that judgement until they are ‘outstanding’ in every area.
The Sixth Form also seeks to imbue ‘challenge’ through outstanding teaching. As a school, it already has an excellent and well-deserved reputation for high expectations and a pathway towards academic success.
At Hackney New Sixth Form, students will enjoy a dynamic, creative and outward-looking community, intent on achieving success for all. Sixth Formers will receive excellent advice and guidance on future opportunities from departmental and pastoral teams and a highly experienced and qualified Higher Education adviser.
Hackney New Sixth Form welcomes students as individuals. The school, as a whole, seeks its students to contribute positively and meaningfully to the community and to act as a role model to the younger year groups.
Sixth Form students will have the opportunity to develop both socially and academically within a structured environment, enabling you them to become independent and proactive learners, ready for university or the world of work
Additionally, Hackney New Sixth Form will have its own dedicated modern and new A level teaching rooms, quiet and collaborative study areas and Sixth Form Common Room.
The Sixth Form Team is only too aware of the fact that that A level study is different, as are the demands placed upon Sixth Form students and they aim to provide the best facilities possible to ensure sixth formers have a successful transition from GCSE to A level.
