Tireless campaigner Hamdy Shahein completes ‘arduous’ charity walk
Hamdy Shahein, the 62 year-old newsagent and indefatigable campaigner, has completed yet another fundraising feat in aid of cancer research.
A highly-respected community figure, Mr Shahein has managed his Stoke Newington newsagent for over 30 years.
Alongside running his busy shop, Mr Shahein has completed countless walks, mountain climbs and marathons all in aid of charity.
Mr Shahein recently took part in the Cancer Research UK’s Shine Night Walk, a 26.2 mile marathon which snakes through London.
Completing the marathon in 8 hours despite not being “in the best physical shape” and suffering an injury to his hand and knee at mile 13, Mr Shahein persevered to cross the finish line.
Mr Shahein said he picked Cancer Research UK as it was a charity “close to his heart”. He said: “I know quite a lot of people have cancer and I wanted to do something.
“I have done a few marathons for Cancer Research, if I can do something for someone else I will, because one day I might need help myself.”
This year Mr Shahein has already undertaken the Three Dams Challenge walk in North Yorkshire, also in aid of cancer research. He will be heading to Scotland to climb Ben Nevis in a few months time.
