Hackney UTC students pitch iDEAs to The Duke of York

His Royal Highness The Duke of York KG recently visited Hackney UTC to meet students who are participating in iDEA (Inspiring Digital Enterprise Award) – a scheme which encourages young people to develop skills for digital enterprise.

The Duke met students from Hackney UTC and Hackney Community College, both of whom prioritise the development of skills in digital technologies and enterprise.

During the visit, The Duke of York heard the business pitches of students who have taken part in the day’s programme, which includes attending sessions to develop finance, marketing and pitching skills, and working in groups with industry mentors to identify sound digital business ideas.

iDEA is designed to inspire young people to follow their passion and give them the opportunity to take ownership of business ideas and the tools to see them through to reality.

Mayor joins forces with BT to urge employers to recognise the value of volunteering

The Mayor of London, Boris Johnson joined forces with BT to urge London businesses to support young Londoners in improving their employability skills.

Key speakers at the event at the BT Tower on 30th June included Hackney University Technical College Principal Catharine Wensley, and HUTC Head Boy Francisco Fernandes.

Anthony Austin, Executive Creative Director at BOSH, from Mother London in Shoreditch, also attended the event. Anthony and the team at BOSH have worked closely with HUTC students.

Lauren Hodge, a current year 11 student at HUTC recently started work experience with the company, which we are sure will open doors for further career development opportunities in Tech City.

Francisco commented: “It was an amazing event, talking in front of Boris Johnson. These opportunities with BT made possibly by Hackney UTC have helped me to develop many skills for the future.”

Andrew Campling, General Manager for London at BT Group, and HUTC Governor, said “The insight and examples that Catharine and Francisco gave about the ways in which Hackney UTC students had developed their skills because of engagement with a diverse range of businesses encouraged the CEOs and Chairman gathered at the event to commit their own companies to get involved.

“This is great news for young people from across London as even more will now get opportunities like those experienced by Francisco and his peers.”

Talent scouting at HUTC with Urban Development

The Uprogress programme came to visit Hackney UTC students on 1 July and a select group of year 10 students were chosen to take part in this rewarding project.

Uprogress has been established by Urban Development as a means of identifying musical talent, introduce young talented artists to exciting world of commercial song writing and recording whilst taking the first tentative steps towards building a coherent and effective artist brand.

The Uprogress programme will open doors and minds to the possibilities of roles such as A&R, Marketing, Artist Management and PR all of which are viable professional careers.

Luke Hannam, Course Leader said: “Urban Development brings industry knowledge into the classroom and beyond”

Hackney Music Festival filmed live by Hackney UTC students!

The Music Centre at Hackney Learning Trust made a special request. They asked our year 10 students to document and made a film of their very popular annual Music Festival which takes place in the Round Chapel.

With the mentoring help of the talented team at BOSH the students experimented in our high tech digital studio introducing them to camera angles, panning, close ups, composition, the roles of floor man, director and much more.

The students were then thrown in the deep end and filmed the event live with no time for a rehearsal!

The Digital Revolution continues…2014 is the ‘Year of Code’

Reforming the way computer programming is taught in schools, equipping the next generation with the knowledge needed to grow this country’s digital, creative and hi-tech economy by teaching children how to code, create programmes and understand how a computer works.

The government has ordered coding to become compulsory for every child aged 5-16 years old.

Make these changes a reality by supporting us to make ‘digital making’ and creative programming truly mainstream and, most importantly, fun!

Geek Out, hosted at Hackney University Technical College, is an interactive event open to all young people aged 11 – 16 years old living in Greater London, an opportunity for professionals from all creative industries to share their skills and knowledge through interactive workshops and talks.

So far Geek Out has hosted an array of talent; real-life’ pythonistas’, 3D model designing, stop film animation, 3D print makers, game designers, Arduino building, music technologists, photographers and much more… ‘Programmers are the wizards of tomorrow’

Join the digital revolution!
