Angus Mulready-Jones stands down as Hackney councillor to take up prisons inspectorate role
A Labour Councillor has stepped down in the run up to next month’s local elections.
Angus Mulready-Jones, who represented Dalston ward, has resigned from his position on Hackney Council to take up a new role as a prison inspector for Her Majesty’s Inspectorate of Prisons.
Mr Mulready-Jones, who is studying a Masters degree in crime science at UCL, said: “I have been working with a charity that works with children and family members of offenders for the last seven years and roles at the Inspectorate don’t come up very regularly.
“Whilst I regret leaving my fellow councillors in the lurch for two months and having to stand down, I felt it was something I had to do.”
There will not be a by-election to replace Mr Mulready-Jones as the resignation falls within six months of the next elections on 22 May, so his seat will remain vacant for now.
Some ward boundaries will be changing with the upcoming elections.
Mr Mulready-Jones said: “I was already standing down from the council. Dalston ward has been cut in half and I had decided not to stand for election again, and it was just unfortunate that it didn’t tie up as neatly as it could have.”
Daltson’s remaining councillors are Cllr Michelle Gregory (Labour) and Cllr Sophie Linden (Labour), who also holds the role of Deputy Mayor.
