Campaigners have accused Hackney Council of ‘planning to squander’ green space on Hackney Marshes to construct a car park for a cricket pavilion.

Save Lea Marshes  (SLM) says original plans put forward by the council involved construction on the footprint of an existing building rather than annexing green space.

Culture chief Councillor Jonathan McShane said there were now ‘practical barriers’ to this and that he believed the majority of residents support the latest plans.

Caroline Day of SLM said: “I challenge Cllr McShane to say this car park is only for the purpose of sport and not for festivals on the Marshes.”
