Independent Police Complaints Commission investigate after soldier Phil Scott killed in crash
An investigation has been launched after a soldier died in a collision shortly after police began pursuing the motorbike he was riding.
Rifleman Phil Scott, 23, was pronounced dead at the scene of the collision on Kingsland Road, Dalston, on 7 August.
His aunt Katherine Barlow told the Hackney Citizen: “The whole family is devastated.”
A Metropolitan Police spokesman said: “At approximately 9:40pm on Wednesday 7 August officers on patrol in Hackney observed a motorcycle travelling at speed.
“A short time later, the motorcycle was in collision with a vehicle on Kingsland Road junction with Englefield Road, E8… The Directorate of Professional Standards has been informed as is routine.”
The Independent Police Complaints Commission confirmed it is investigating.
The collision happened close to the spot in Downham Road where moped rider Michael McGuiness, 18, died in a collision with a car just three months previously.
An inquest into Mr McGuiness’s death will be heard at Poplar Coroners’ Court next month.
