An apprenticeship scheme recently launched in Hackney is providing placements for up to 75 talented young people looking to gain experience in the construction industry.

It is a joint venture between two Hackney companies – Union Developers and local training provider CSV Springboard – and aims to help furnish 16-25 year olds with the skills needed to find full-time employment.

Successful applicants will be assisted throughout the year-long apprenticeship by Springboard Hackney, which aims to help young people gain qualifications, develop new skills and get a step up on the career ladder.

“The apprenticeship programme is a fantastic opportunity for young people to work towards an accredited qualification while earning a salary,” says Springboard manager Sophie Earnshaw.

Union Developments, an award-winning property company, will be placing the apprentices in two of their construction sites. The first round of applicants will work on a Hackney Council-approved regeneration scheme on Sidworth Street and the second on an upcoming Mare Street building project.

“I am delighted to have launched this apprenticeship scheme in Hackney, an area which has so many talented young people who could benefit from one of over 75 training placements,” said Ben Spencer, Development Director at Union Developments.

“I believe hands-on apprenticeships on projects, such as our recent proposal on Mare Street, can provide invaluable experience to help prepare young adults for a lifelong career in the world of construction,” he added. “I look forward to seeing how our apprentices develop their skills over the coming years.”

Earnshaw called the scheme a “fantastic opportunity that will be of significant benefit to the community”.
