Campaign resurrected as divisive Stoke Newington Sainsbury’s plans rise again
New plans for a Sainsbury’s superstore in the heart of Stoke Newington look set to reignite a huge campaign of opposition that saw protesters dressed as zombies march through the area.
Developers Newmark Properties (SN) LLP have filed a revised planning application for the Wilmer Place scheme with the council – but documents relating to their plans have not yet been made public on the Town Hall’s website.
The application is the latest development in a long-running saga that culminated in the council’s planning sub-committee throwing out Newmark’s previous plans – a decision celebrated by opponents who had argued the scheme would harm the ecology of Abney Park Cemetery.
Newmark say its plans, which also include the creation of new homes, will bring benefits to Hackney and that its new application addresses issues raised by the sub-committee.
Campaigners from group Stokey Local say they are now gearing up for “round two” and are encouraging residents to contribute to a three-week consultation.
Jane Holgate from Stokey Local said there seemed to be “relatively little difference” between the old and new proposals but she could not assess the application until documentation had been made public.
A spokesman for Newmark Properties (SN) LLP said: “Newmark Properties (SN) LLP remains passionate about the project and the regeneration benefits it will bring to Hackney residents and to the Stoke Newington area.
“After carefully considering the reasons for refusal we have submitted a revised application to Hackney Council which aims to fully address the issues raised.”
