St John at Hackney church blessed with showstopping 2013 music lineup
Stood in the geographical centre of Hackney, St John at Hackney has been quietly drawing in visitors from all over the capital with its growing line-up of events.
For the last two years mental health charity Mencap have been using the venue to host their Little Noise Sessions with the likes of Elbow, Goldfrapp, Coldplay and Sinéad O’Connor performing – undoubtable big hitters for this local church.
Providing further confirmation that this historic building is carving its place on the map of top London music venues is the line up in store for 2013.
Arts charity Moringa has recently announced Johns Sessions, a new series of concerts bringing in some of the biggest names in ambient and electronic music for a series of specially curated shows.
Kicking things off in June will be a rare performance from William Basinski, founder of New York loft for the arts nicknamed Acardia. He will be joined by Austrian multilayered composer Fennesz.
Following on in July, German modern pianist and composer Nils Framh, will be performing a special show set in the centre of the space with support from one quarter of Mercury Prize nominated Portico Quartet, Jack Wyllie, with his exciting new solo project.
The impressive programme is set grow, with new shows being added each month throughout the year. Already confirmed for August and September is Actress with a specially curated show by the illusive producer himself, Canadian composer and sound artist Tim Hecker, ex Yellow Swans’s Peter Swanson, London based Helm, and Triangle records Vessel.

27 June: Austrian Christian Fennesz, known for blending guitar with electronic textures to make multilayered compositions has been at the forefront of digital music for many years now. He will be performing in a double bill with internationally acclaimed New York based ambient composer and founder New York loft for the creative arts nicknamed “Arcadia”, William Basinski, in his first ever solo London show.
11 July: Berlin based composer and producer Nils Frahm, releasing music under the Erased Tapes imprint, also home to Peter Broderick, and Ólafur Arnalds, is on the bill with one quarter of Mercury Prize nominated Portico Quartet, Hackney based Jack Wylie, with his exciting new solo ambient synth show.
29 August: The cavernous setting of St John’s is sure to provide a rich and evocative backdrop to the themes of illusive south London producer Actress’s last album, R.I.P., which was awarded album of the year by DUMMY magazine. Special guests due to be announced shortly.
19 September: Critically acclaimed Canadian musician and sound artist Tim Hecker will bring his transportive experimental ambient show to the church in September. Avant-garde electronic musician Peter Swanson, formally of Yellow Swans, will also be giving a rare performance following his latest EP Punk Authority. Support will come from Triangle records Vessel.
