Food Kitchen ‘Made In Hackney’ brings health and happiness
Thanks to an amazing team of volunteers, local project Made in Hackney has created a beautiful recycled kitchen and helped people learn more about food.
The Made in Hackney local food kitchen has hosted organic food growing sessions and cookery courses for expert foodies, young carers and those on rehabilitation programs.
Recent workshops run by the group include lessons in making chutney and jams from local produce with patchwork farmers, a session on indulgent vegan baking and a demonstration of how to preserve vegetables via fermentation.
And with the help of a team of volunteers they have introduced nearly 100 people to locally grown, affordable organic produce via the capital’s network of independently run veg box schemes.
All this was possible thanks to Big Lottery funding, but more is needed. By making a donation to Made In Hackney you can help the group expand its 2013 program and make local residents healthier and happier with food – and food skills – that are good for both people and planet.
Project co-ordinator and founder Sarah Bentley says: “Our small but dedicated team make money go a long way (and work a lot of extra hours for free!) but running a community kitchen to a high standard is not cheap. Every bin bag, apron, broken plate, ingredient and energy bill needs paying for.”
Made in Hackney’s plans for 2013 are ambitious. They would like to take their services to different parts of the borough, work with harder to reach more groups and tackle food poverty by developing a course for the growing numbers of people who feed themselves – and their families – on a budget of £10 a week.
