New Black Film Festival screens at Picturehouses
The New Black Film Festival, celebrating Jamaican and Trinidadian independence, is running throughout October in Hackney, Stratford and Brixton, including the Hackney Picturehouse.
The festival will be screening twelve award-winning documentaries and features, along with discussions and director and cast Q&As, which should bring some lively debate. There will also be special guests who will be attending some of the screenings and participating in the panel discussions.
The theme of the 2012 New Black Film Festival is ‘Shh! The Secret Lives of Everyday People’, delving into the closet of black communities in the hope of bringing into the open issues that have been swept under the carpet.
This programme also marks the 25th anniversary of Black History Month, and to highlight this significant milestone, the festival is screening work by inspiring and emerging independent Black filmmakers from the UK, US, Jamaica and South Africa.
Films to be screened include Oscar-tipped Beasts of the Southern Wild and award-winning Director Penny Woolcock’s feature documentary One Mile Away.
