Hackney charity Skyway celebrates its ten year anniversary this month and to mark this milestone  they will be hosting a number of activities at the Dalston Eastern Curve Garden.

The celebrations begin on Friday 28 September and run from 3-6pm, They include an exhibition of their work (past and present), a silent Art auction and a High Tea.

The events have been planned to further awareness, insight and support for the organisation’s tireless efforts of working with ‘at risk’ young people in and around inner London.

SkyWay’s mission and purpose is to encourage and aid the youth to make the most of themselves, achieve their goals and contribute positively to their communities.

A football tournament back in 2002 marked the start of this small but ambitious charity. Since then, it has grown by leaps and bounds, and has secured funding from organisations such as Comic Relief, Children in Need and the Home Office.

The charity’s work consists of training young people (aged 16-25) in vocational work including sports coaching, multimedia tutoring and youth work.

It also facilitates workshops covering topics such as  alcohol and drugs, sexual health and finance management.

Last year, it worked with over 2,500 young people in fields such as health and well-being, media, sport, mentoring and reparation.

Grow SkyWay – one of their latest projects – is a scheme which aims to get young people into gardening, and reconnect them with their environment. (More can be learned about the project and how to get involved at the High Tea).

One of Skyway’s success ‘stories’, Jenkins Akinola, was referred to SkyWay two years ago. He is now at university studying business and working on a film project.

In turn, he is using his experience to help other disadvantaged young people, as a way to say thank you to Skyway for its support.

You too can support Skyway by coming tomorrow to the  Dalston Eastern Curve Garden and joining in the celebrations.

Feel free to bring along friends and/or colleagues who are interested in learning more about SkyWay.
