Fabrications has a brand new Imaginerium workshop space for craft classes

The Imaginerium is a new sustainable craft space at Fabrications in Broadway Market. The educational space, located at the back of the popular Broadway Market shop, is designed to host a wide variety of classes and workshops.

Premiering for the London Design Festival, the new initiative will launch with a special exhibition of sketches, idea boards and models by Delvendahl & Martin architects as well as one off pieces by Barley Massey and Out of the Dark.

Barley Massey, who has run Fabrications for twelve years, initiated this creative collaboration to enable her sustainable textile design practice to grow.

Ms Massey created all the soft furnishings in the new space, including wooden school chairs covered with a variety of her own designs, found textiles and curtaining made from over a hundred re-used men’s ties.

Delvendahl Martin Architects got involved on this project back in 2007 when Barley first approached them with the idea of transforming her existing shop and workshop into a space for creative exchange.

In the spirit of Fabrications’s approach to the principle of upcycling local business waste, their design for the new rear extension to the shop and the basement workshop incorporates building materials and components that are either reclaimed, made from re-cycled materials or with low embodied energy.

Out of the Dark then used the blank canvas to develop a new kitchen and storage scheme that brought old and new together, up-cycling items such as fruit crates, old lock wood and a 1960s Gplan wardrobe to create a unique and very functional kitchen.

Dominic Crinson’s installation at Fabrications features hundreds of wall and floor tiles installed in the shop and workshop. Every tile used had been either a factory reject or recycled from old projects. Dominic utilised almost all of his rejected tiles that had been gathering over the years to form a kaleidoscopic patchwork effect.

The classes to be held in the Imaginerium are mainly textile-based ,with everything from the basics of felt-making and spinning to embroidery and quilting.
