A resounding “We love the Queen” was heard across Hackney as people gathered in the rain-soaked streets to celebrate the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee over four days of festivities.

The crowds were filled with residents, as well as people from around the world who choose to live and work in East London, showing appreciation for the Queen – or at least out to enjoy the extra-long bank holiday weekend.

Meara Michaels, originally from Kingston, Canada, said: “It’s fantastic to be part of living history that is positive and the chance to see something really amazing.

“I respect the Queen – she is a female in power who has been about for sixty years and is looking good at eighty-plus.”

The Big Lunch, the annual community initiative which brings neighbours together, was also a huge success.
