2012 London elections – last chance to register to vote
The countdown to the 2012 London elections has begun and with only two days left to register to vote, Hackney residents are being encouraged to get informed and to get involved.
Less than half of the capital’s voters (45 percent) took part in the 2008 Mayoral election, inspiring innovative efforts to get more London residents to vote this time round.
The Ballot Box roadshow visited Hackney Town Hall last Wednesday (11 April) to tell local residents about the elections and how to take part.
The giant inflatable ballot box has been touring all of London’s 33 boroughs, telling residents how they can vote for Mayor of London, a Constituency Assembly Member and a London-wide Assembly member. All three elections will take place on Thursday 3 May.
The ballot box was located outside the Town Hall on Mare Street in Hackney from 1pm to 3pm on 11 April. Hackney residents were given handouts about the elections and the opportunity to ask questions about how to vote.
This public awareness campaign to tell Londoners about the election and how they can vote is being organised by independent election group London Elects with the message, ‘Have Your Say. Vote 3rd May.’
John Bennett, Greater London Returning Officer, said: “We want Hackney residents to pass on the message to their friends and colleagues, Have Your Say Vote 3rd May.
“The Mayor and the London Assembly are responsible for issues that affect everyone – from transport and policing, to housing and the environment – with a budget of more than £14bn per year. And voting is your chance to have your say on the things that matter to you in your city.”
Residents wanting to vote in the London elections have until this Wednesday, 18 April to register. Only those residents who are registered will be able to vote.
