Human chain to protest at NHS changes
Campaigners are urging patients and NHS staff worried about changes to the NHS to demonstrate their support for the health service by joining hands and forming a human chain around the Homerton Hospital.
The ‘Hands around the Homerton’ event, scheduled for 1pm on Saturday July 16th, is organised by the Hackney Coalition to Save the NHS which includes the Unite union, Hackney doctors and Homerton hospital workers. The group says changes contained in the government’s Health and Social Care Bill risk cuts to services and may even result in the closure of some hospitals as the NHS is opened up to private providers.
“The recent ‘pause’ in the government’s driving through of the Health Bill did not bring a pause in the massive top-down restructuring of the NHS which has carried on regardless,” a spokesperson for the event organisers said. “There has been no change in the policy to introduce more competition (i.e. big private healthcare companies) into the NHS.”
To take part, assemble from 12 noon in the park between Brooksby’s Walk and Wardle Street, opposite Homerton Hospital. Contact hackneykonp@aol.com mob: 07896 303 207
