Single Stems
Fancy looking for love amongst the lavender, pouting amid the petunias, or finding friends among the ferns?
North One Garden Centre is opening its foliage-covered doors for the first ever singles night to be held at a garden centre.
This landmark event will take place on Friday 11th June from 6pm to 8pm.
So come and mingle with the single, grab some gardening advice and, pick up a plant (or a partner). For those of you who are uncertain, maybe you’d be tempted by a complimentary glass of fizz and nibbles, a 10 per cent discount on all purchases that evening, and expert gardening advice from the knowledgeable staff.
Paul Holt, shop manager and gardening guru, came up with the idea as nearly all his friends were in relationships: “I want to make being single more fun, so I mentioned this idea to an unattached friend over dinner. Seeing his enthusiasm, I knew instantly that I was on to a winner.
“All I had to do was convince the recently remarried owner Beryl Henderson about what I had planned for a summer’s evening in her beloved garden centre.
“What better place for friendships to flourish? Voted ‘Boutique Garden Centre of the Year’ in 2007, our bijou site of just 425 square metres cannot be described as among the nation’s largest centres, but it’s certainly one of the most innovative.”
Away from the hustle and bustle of the city streets, against the backdrop of calming green foliage and relaxing background music, North One Garden Centre is an oasis for busy city-dwellers, whether you have an established garden, a single window box, a balcony or a fetish for indoor plants.
“It has always been a place for people from the neighbourhoods of Hoxton, Shoreditch and Islington to find inspiration,” says Paul Holt. “Now we hope it will be somewhere they can swap tips, maybe even on companion planting, and make like-minded friends. Who knows what buds might pop?”
