Hackney club listings: May 2010

Thrice as Nice 001As the weather heats up, so too the various parties and events around Hackney; May sees some absolute belters taking place in our fair borough:

Saturday 1 May

The Alibi takes us back to UK Garage’s hey day with a rare appearance from Oxide & Neutrino, most famous for their casualty theme song sampling ‘Bound for the Reload’. Support comes from Ant not Dec and the Rough Trade DJs. 20.00 – 03.00, Free, The Alibi, 91 Kingsland High Street.

Upmarket Shoreditch boozer (and not strictly Hackney) The Redchurch hosts the Radio One affiliated Slippery shindig, with DJs Risco, Gentleman Ditch, Mook and Bobby Big serving up a mixed beat platter. 20.00 – 02.00, Free, The Redchurch, 107 Redchurch Street.

East Village, née Medicine Bar, have some real beauties lined up for May, starting with DJ and Member of the British Empire Norman Jay’s Good Times night. Featuring Norman himself, Paul Louth and Sean Garnham it looks like a bit of a scene. 21.00 – 04.00, £8, East Village, 89 Great Eastern Street

Sunday 2 May

Old school reggae abounds as Studio 1 and Treasure Isle take over Vision’s for a night of appreciation for the classic label. Expect an attitude-free dance at this Dalston institution 21.00 – 04.00, Free, Vision Nite Spot, 588a Kingsland Road, 020 7275 7520

Atmosphere at The Last Days of Decadence offers an interesting take on the World Cup Party; DJs Electro Soul, Nookie and Paul SG all drop tunes from their country of origin (assuming they qualify) 22.00-04.00, £5, The Last Days of Decadence, 145 Shoreditch High Street.

Not a new flavour of Ben and Jerry’s, Rum & Ass in fact gives some of London’s best DJ’s and producers the chance to spin a departure from their usual repertoire. Rattus Rattus, Klose One, Jon ‘Rap Attack’ Wright and guests perform on this occasion 20.00 – 02.00, £5, The Macbeth, 70 Hoxton Street.

Thursday 6 May

For those of a political bent, SNIA are hosting an election night special. Following the success of their Obamarathon, watch the results come in over a drink or two in Stokey’s answer to The Factory.

East Village bring us hip hop heavyweights Just Blaze and Alchemist, plus local support from Spin Doctor and Mr. Thing. You can’t say fairer than that for a Thursday night.

Friday 7 May

Former Stokey haunt The Moustache Bar team up with Guys and Dolls and invite Little Boots, Anna Metronomy, Primary 1 and Shula’s Wigmwam round for cocktails and card games.

Saturday 8 May

A typically hedonistic affair at Dalston Junction, featuring HomoElectrician Mancunian Luke Unabomber supported by resident Jamie Bull providing ‘bum ‘n’ bass and East End pub-step’. Upstairs is soundtracked by The Lovely Jonjo & Cathal O’Brien. 22.00 – 04.00, Free before 22.00 (£5 after), Dalston Superstore, 117 Kingsland Rd, 020 7254 2273

Bethnal Green Working Men’s Club dims the lights for a salubrious Go-Go session in which the girls grind and unwind all evening, whilst dance floor podiums offer you a chance to give the dancers a run for their money. All this takes place to a furious rhythm and blues soundtrack from King Salami and the Cumberland 3. 21.00 – 02.00, £8, Bethnal Green Working Men’s Club, Pollard Row.

Wednesday 12 May

Local Promoters God don’t Like it honour their 2nd anniversary at Bardens Boudoir with live bands Bo Ningen, The Rayographs + Maria and the Mirrors and DJ’s Mathew of Parlour Records, Ricky Ticks and the Elite Barbarians. 21.00 – 04.00, £5, Bardens Boudoir, 36 Stoke Newington Road.

Thursday 13 May

Audio Visual aficionados Hexstatic display their unique sight and sound show to Cargo with support from David E Sugar, Black Masa and Parks Dept 20.00 – 01.00, £9.50, Cargo, 83 Rivington Street.
The Bowie Bar returns to one of Hackneys slimmest venues, The Auld Shillelagh. Expect the thin white duke to be throwing darts in lover’s eyes and other metaphors 19.30 -12.00, Free, The Auld Shillelagh, 105 Stoke Newington Church Street.

Friday 14 May

Mumbo Jumbo presents their favourite Specialist Scratch DJ Risco dropping quality Hip Hop, Funk & genre dodging grooves 20.00 – 01.00, Free, Bar Music Hall, 134 Curtain Road.

Saturday 15 May

Ben Pistor and Dave Oscroft (the former of Disco Bloodbath fame) serenade the London Fields crowd with yacht Rock, lost edits, forgotten Balearic gems and pop treats.

Gypsy Hotel tender a bourbon soaked, snake charming, Rock & roll cabaret at Barden’s Boudoir, showcasing such diverse elements as Blackberry Wood, Kitty Bang Bang,
Timothy Victors Folk Orchestra, Queen Creolo and DJ Scratchy. 20.00 – 04.00 (show 21.00 sharp!), £6.66 before 22.00, £9.99 after, Bardens Boudoir, 36 Stoke Newington Road.

Friday 21 May
Supafunk Especial welcome Los Charly’s to celebrate their album launch with some nufunk, loungecore and generally solid grooves. DJ Jorge Montiel provides back-up on a disco tip 20.00 – 03.00, Free, Bar Music Hall, 134 Curtain Road.

Several Hackney hostelries take part in the London/Glasgow crossover festival, Stag and Dagger on the 21st. Venues include The Book Club, Cargo, Catch, East Village and Jaguar Shoes and stand out acts confirmed thus far count Cooly G, Filthy Few, Daddy Freddy, People Under the Stairs and The Phenomenal handclap Band amongst their number. Saturday 22 May

As expected, The Star of Bethnal Green (Greater Hackney) has plenty in the bag this month with live music/ DJs/general mayhem every Thursday, Friday and Saturday. Dib Dab looks well worth checking out, as Droppin’ Science DJ’s Nickname (55DSL) & Matman and Daredevil (DMC/ITF Champ) team up to deliver a seamless blend of Hip Hop, Funk, Soul, Disco, 80’s & Newjack. 21.00 – 02.00, Free before 22.00 (£3 after), The Star of Bethnal Green, 359 Bethnal Green Road.

Friday 28 May

Young & Lost, one of the hottest labels in London, fetch their records, bands and knowledge to The Legion for a good old fashioned mosh about the place

Long running Shoreditch party darlings Filthy Few bring us live music from Don’t Waite Animate and Natural Disasters (all the way from Italy) and DJing from Campari Safari, Firas, Jay Karim and Michael Palmer. Sounds awesome and its free.
