The Rio Cinema, Kingsland Road, Dalston

The Rio, Hackney’s last remaining cinema, begins its 100th anniversary celebrations with a special screening of films from Hackney Archives.

In 1909, an auctioneer’s shop on Kingsland High Street was converted into a 175-seat “electric picture house” named the Kingsland Picture House.

Over the next 100 years that picture house has changed management and identity numerous times, grown significantly in size and undergone many name changes, but is still standing as Hackney’s last remaining working cinema – better known since 1979 as the Rio.

The Rio has evolved into one of London’s leading independent cinemas, hosting various events, screenings and festivals for local residents.

In addition, the Rio has developed many outreach schemes including free screenings for the over-60s (with free tea, cake and transport) and a schools screenings programme that works with over 10,000 children and young people per year.

Thanks to grants from Film London and The Goldsmiths’ Company, the Rio is beginning a series of events to mark this landmark 100th anniversary celebration with a special screening of films from the Hackney Archive.

The event will also feature new footage discovered during the Rio’s recent ‘Home Movies’ project. The films are a rich source of memories, featuring footage of Hackney landmarks throughout the last century, enabling us all to relive Hackney’s rich and vibrant history on the big screen.
