New Year’s honours for Hackney residents
Four Hackney residents have been distinguished in the New Year’s honours list.
They include Oxford maths professor Marcus du Sautoy, who received an OBE for services to science. Professor du Sautoy, who specialises in number theory, has made numerous appearances on radio and television, including BBC Four’s programme Mind Games. In 2008 du Sautoy succeeded Richard Dawkins as Simonyi Professor for the Public Understanding of Science.
Imelda Redmond, Chief Executive of Carers UK, was awarded a CBE for services to disadvantaged people. Carers UK has successfully campaigned for the legal rights of carers, and Redmond writes regularly in the media on this topic.
Cyrus Todiwala of the Café Spice Namasté Restaurant Group received an OBE for services to the hospitality industry. Born in India, Todiwala moved to the UK in 1991 and is today known for developing innovative Indian dishes with unusual ingredients. He has won numerous previous awards, including an MBE in 2000.
Nicholas Howard, Parliamentary Clerk in the Prime Minister’s Office, was awarded and OBE.
