Hackney primary schools bottom of league tables

Hackney’s primary schools have remained at the bottom of the school league tables for the seventh year in a row.

Newly-released figures show that SAT scores for Hackney primary schools are lower than those for any other local authority in England.

Five of the borough’s schools have failed to meet the Government’s minimum requirement that at least 55 per cent of students should achieve the standard expected of their age in both English and Maths:

Burbage and Whitmore schools in Hoxton
St Matthias (C Of E) and Princess May schools in Stoke Newington
Morningside School in Morning Lane.

In a statement on Key Stage 2 performance 2009, the Learning Trust said,

“Over the past four years, the rate of improvement in the number of pupils achieving Level 4+ in both English and maths has increased at a rate which narrows the gap between Hackney pupils and national averages.

“Between 2007 and 2008 Hackney pupils achieved the third highest increase nationally in the percentage of 11 year olds achieving level 4 in both English and Maths. Unfortunately, this progress was not maintained between 2008 and 2009 and we have seen a plateau in performance.

“It is important to note, however, that in 2009 the number of Hackney primary schools below the national ‘floor target’ benchmark for Key Stage 2 fell by 47 per cent. Also, 80 per cent of the primary schools inspected by Ofsted in the 2008/09 academic year were deemed ‘good’ or ‘outstanding’. The Learning Trust strategy has been to ensure the improvement of the lowest performing schools.

“The Improving Standards Strategy is focused on raising Key Stage 2 outcomes to national averages by 2012. We are working in partnership with schools to ensure that the results will be in line with or above the national average.

“We are confident that the strategies to improve standards that we have put in place will have a significant impact, and that results in primary schools will continue to improve as they have done over the last four years as a whole.”

The Learning Trust is the not-for-profit company which runs all the education services for the London Borough of Hackney. We are responsible for schools, children’s centres, early years and adult education.
