An action-packed short film highlighting the talents of young people in Hackney as both footballers and film makers will be premiered at the Bridge Academy on Friday 23 October.

Working alongside professional film makers, it was filmed by young people from SkyWay’s filmmaking workshops.

If you would like to reserve a seat then contact SkyWay now or alternatively, watch it here.

Run by local charity SkyWay for the eighth consecutive year, the football tournament itself saw over 200 male and female players aged 10-19 years compete in 6 and 7-a-side games at Haggerston Park every Friday evening last month.

Teams came from all over Hackney to participate in a variety of cups, including a Plate Cup competition in the male 17-19 years age group, named in remembrance of Jamal Mason-Blair who had competed in Teenage Kicks in previous years.

SkyWay began Teenage Kicks (TK) in 2002 to engage young people in Hackney in positive activities on Friday evenings – a time when crime and anti-social behaviour was at its peak. The tournament proved an immediate success with over 300 young people either taking part in the tournament or supporting SkyWay to organise and run the tournament.

Since then, TK has grown and engaged well over 2,000 young people and members of the community who have either played, volunteered, watched or presented the entertainment at the tournament.

This year saw TK expand to accommodate the ever increasing number of teams and spectators with a move to Haggerston Park. As part of SkyWay’s mission to deliver youth led programmes, an event management programme runs in conjunction with the tournament.

It offers young people an opportunity to learn skills in event management and support the SkyWay team in the organisation and facilitation of the event. This year saw five young event managers gain valuable hands on experience working as part of a team.

In addition to this, SkyWay was supported by twenty or so volunteers from in and around the community – in everything from stewarding and registering teams to offering refreshments and performing administration duties.

Teenage Kicks will kick off again next August but if you can’t wait till then get in contact with SkyWay and register for its forthcoming 4-a-side futsal night league competition beginning in October.
