Mrs D’Silva’s Detective Instincts is a murder myster of romance, railways, recipes and revolution in the heart of 1960s Anglo-India. Ten-year-old Errol is having a great time at the picnic by the Hooghly… until he stumbles upon a dead body washed up on the riverbank. It all turns in to a bit of a badmash until Mrs D’Silva discovers her detective instincts, leading her into a dangerous underworld of corruption, exploitation, and political unrest as she tries to unmask the deadly Shaitan threatening the people of Calcutta. In this hugely enjoyable debut novel, Glen Peters vividily evokes the textures and tastes of his youth in a society struggling to find its place in a newly independent India.
With a feast of home-cooked samosas and traditional Indian sweets to spice up the evening, Glen will talk about how he came to write a detective novel and his experiences of growing up in Calcutta in the 1960s.
