EU referendum: Hackney results are no surprise

The Hackney Vote compared to London and the rest of Britain. Chart: Electoral Commission

Chart comapring Hackney, London and UK results

Almost eight in ten voters in Hackney (78 per cent) voted for Britain to remain in the European Union.

This result is in stark contract with the rest of the United Kingdom, where the Leave campaign won with 52 per cent of all votes cast.

The share of votes for Remain in Hackney was above the total in London (60 per cent) and among the highest across the capital, second only to Lambeth (79 per cent).

Results from Hackney are no surprise as the demographics of the borough are in line with the ones of other areas in the United Kingdom that voted to remain.

In fact, for several months before the vote, psephologists and pollsters found that young people in urban areas – especially London – were more likely to vote to stay in the EU.

A total of 106,422 were cast in the borough, with turnout of just over 62 per cent.

This is however lower than London (70 per cent) and the UK overall (72 per cent).
