Hackney’s favourite farmyard has launched a campaign to raise money to “feed the animals” and keep its admission free of charge.

Hackney City Farm on Hackney Road was established in 1984 when the site was trasnformed from a derelict haulage yard into an urban green oasis, and welcomes over 75,000 visitors each year.

Volunteer and Education Co-ordinator Roisin O’Cearnaigh said that a core grant from Hackney Council has been “greatly reduced” leaving the farm struggling to feed the animals.

O’Cearnaigh said funding bodies will not award grants to help the upkeep of the chickens, goats and donkeys.

She said: “Not everyone in Hackney can afford to pay to come to the farm, and we want to remain accessible to all, but if even a third of our visitors gave £1 we would meet our target.”
