A Hackney web domain name has been sold for over three thousand pounds following a frenzied online bidding war last week.

The name www.hackney.co.uk eventually sold for the “bargain” price of £3,100.

It was the first time the name became available to buy since registrations were formalised in 1996.

Domain names featuring London addresses are in high demand. Previously the domain name www.croydon.co.uk was sold for £9,000, whilst www.harleystreet.co.uk was sold for £16,500.

Robert Lee Ricketts from Web Consultancy, the company dealing with the auction, congratulated the domain name’s new owners.

He said: “It’s rare to get such a famous name domain for such a low price. I hope they have success with it and that the content reflects the famous area of Hackney with pride.

“Domain name sales are fairly frequent, but as this one was so rare and obviously relevant to London we felt it might be noteworthy.”

Mr Ricketts said it was “highly unlikely” that the domain name will be made available on the open market again now it has been sold.

The winning bidder of the coveted address kept their identity under wraps.
