Management at Dalston’s Rio cinema have sought to dismiss reports that it is under threat of closure, but admitted funds are badly needed to maintain its alternative programming schedule.

The art-deco cinema on Kingsland Road has suffered a sharp drop in funding since last year as money was diverted to pay for the Olympics while ticket receipts also dropped over the summer months this year.

A spokesperson said the cinema was not about to close ‘any-time soon’, but added: ”We need to improve our financial situation over the coming months to maintain our diverse and distinct programming.”

In a bid to rectify the situation, the cinema, which is known for its art-house offering, is calling on supporters to become members or simply go more often.

It has also launched a £50,000 fundraising drive as it seeks to renovate the 100 year-old Grade II-listed building, which is clearly showing its age.

£5,000 has been raised so far.

The spokesperson said: “Running a fully independent stand-alone cinema is a costly business and if you can afford to make a donation – whether large or small – it will certainly be put to good use.”

However, Charles Rubinstein, general manager at the Rio, said that since their appeal things are already starting to look up with good attendance for films including Woody Allen’s Blue Jasmine and current hit Gravity.

He said: “We have had a good run recently with strong films attracting substantial audiences. The second half of the financial year is always stronger than the first, so I am optimistic that the Rio’s financial recovery will continue.

“We are also delighted about the considerable increase we are witnessing in people taking out membership of the Friends of the Rio.”

Membership costs £25 a year and includes two free tickets and £2 off per admission.
