Sustainable Hackney – logo a go-go

Hackney: Seeking a symbol for sustainability

Young aspiring graphic designers are being encouraged to enter a competition to design a logo and image for a local environmental networking group.

In its search for the designers of the future, Sustainable Hackney is inviting youngsters aged 16-24 to showcase their talent and compete for the winning prize of £200.

Russell Miller, chair of Sustainable Hackney, said: “We are looking for fresh ideas to help us connect up the many groups and individuals who already do great work in protecting our environment and we knew the right place to look was among the young people living and studying in the borough.”

The competition runs until Friday 25 January, with entrants needing to design a logo or brand image, postcard, website banner and background image that reflect the group’s aims of developing understanding of environmental issues among people and organisations across the borough.

Apart from the winning prize, one runner up will receive £50 and the five finalists’ designs will be showcased on the Sustainable Hackney website.

Youth organiser and Sustainable Hackney member Mustafa Korel said: “As a youth programme leader developing future campaigners, I see this as an excellent opportunity for us to engage young people who both want to express and showcase their design skills and for us to develop our identity with the creative input of the young people of Hackney.

“Young people have a stake in the great work that we’re doing in Hackney. They are our future leaders, teachers and volunteers. I hope this competition will inspire them to get engaged in sustainability in a creative and innovative way.”

The competition runs until Friday 25 January 2013.
