Diners took cover as a gunman fired shots at a Turkish restaurant in Broadway Market yesterday evening.

The Solche restaurant on Broadway Market was full, and there were three tables outside facing the street where the gunman appeared.

The waitress who was working there was threatened at around 9.15pm. She told the police: “I’ve been living here for a month so I don’t know anyone who could hurt me…I was just with a customer, and suddenly a man came up from the canal and pointed a hand gun at me.”

Speaking to the Hackney Citizen she said: “When the bullet went through the restaurant window glass everyone took cover. Women were running down to the toilets. Then the police came,” she said. “I was in tears and deep shock.”

She later told police: “He was wearing a black hoody and jeans. He came from the right, from the canal. Two shots. Then he ran down back to the right.”

Police officers secured the area interviewed and all witnesses, saying they do not yet know if it was one person acting alone or with others.

The police have been asked for a statement regarding the incident.

Update 2pm Monday 20 August 2012:

The police say two casings were recovered at the scene.

Detectives from the Trident Gangs Command are investigating the incident, and say at this early stage they are retaining an open mind as to the motive.
