Two Hackney bakeries have made the shortlist in a competition to find the best bread in London.

‘Hackney Wild’ at E5 Bakehouse in London Fields and the white loaf at the Spence Bakery in Stoke Newington are among the 20 breads identified by the Real Bread Campaign and Jellied Eel Magazine as part of their Londoners’ Loaf competition.

E5 Bakehouse owner Ben Mackinnon said: “Starting E5 Bakehouse here in Hackney has been an amazing experience. The bakehouse exists because of the support and enthusiasm of our local customers and staff, who put up with occasional singed loaves, sell out days and our haphazard ways.

“We have entered our signature loaf, the Hackney Wild loaf, into the Londoner’s Loaf competition. It’s not just called that because Hackney’s a wild place, but to make a point that it is produced locally and uses local wild yeasts to rise the dough.

“All of our bread utilise sourdough, which produce a tastier, longer lasting, and more nutritious bread.”

The idea behind the competition is to find London’s favourite loaf of ‘Real Bread’.

Bread officionados can support their favourite bakery by voting in the competition, which closes on Monday 20 August.

To vote, go to The Londoners’ Loaf Competition.
