Pupils were treated to much more than the usual assembly when actor Jude Law today arrived at a secondary school in the capital to launch a new film competition for the London 2012 Cultural Olympiad.

Law arrived at the Petchey Academy in Dalston with documentary-maker Jeremy Gilley, the founder of the Peace One Day campaign, which argues that 21 September should be an international day of ceasefire and non-violence.

Together, they are encouraging young people to make a short film inspired by the theme of “Truce”.

First to make a Truce film were pupils from the school, hence this visit. Law, last seen as Watson in Guy Ritchie’s Sherlock Holmes, said it was “a call to action for young people to change the world through creativity and the power of film.

“Peace One Day is already working with young people across the world and our collaboration with London 2012 is a great opportunity to engage with young people in a creative way.”

The competition is part of a collaboration between the Peace One Day campaign and the Cultural Olympiad with details on further initiatives due to be announced next year.
